The Yett Seminar

The Yett Seminar has its origin in a bequest from the estate of Alleen Yett. Miss Yett was a member of Alpha Chi, serving as president during the 1943-1945 biennium. Upon her death, the Chapter placed the bequest in a savings account and later in CDs. What has evolved is the Yett Seminar -- an enrichment program for members using interest from the CDs.

Originally the seminars were planned by special committees. The first Yett Seminar was held in September, 1987, at the Post Oak Inn in Burnet, with Dr. Barbara DeShong as the guest speaker. In September, 1989, the Seminar was held at the Horseshoe Bay Country Club. In September, 1991, we visited Delta Kappa Gamma International Headquarters in Austin, followed by lunch at Green Pastures and a visit to an art gallery on the UT campus. The 1993 and 1995 Seminars included a meal at the Tropical Hideaway in Granite Shoals with time spent in chapter committee planning for the bienniums. In September, 1997, we relaxed on the Vanishing Texas River Dinner Cruise on Lake Buchanan, accompanied by several spouses as guests.

In 1998 plans for the Yett Seminar were assigned to the Personal Growth and Services Committee. In September, 1999, we traveled to San Antonio where we visited the San Antonio Museum of Art, lunched at the historic Menger Hotel, cruised along the Paseo del Rio and visited the McNay Art Museum on the way home. In September, 2001, we toured and lunched at the Bob Bullock State Museum, followed by a tour of International Headquarters, where we met several International officers and committee members working on programs for the Society. In September, 2003, we toured The LadyBird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, followed by a buffet at Serrano's Restaurant. In September, 2005, we toured the Museum of Western Art and the James Avery Store in Kerrville, with a buffet at the Inn of the Hills. In September, 2007, we toured the Blanton Museum in Austin.

An Unforgettable Day in Austin
March 25, 2009

What a day we had! We were treated royally for our seventy-fifth birthday. The twelve Alpha Chi members (Jane Knapik, Lois Laxson, Joyce Craven, Marilyn Curtis, Lou Vitek, Susan Nye, Ruth Engel, Faye Creel, Sharon Tays, Doris Phillips, Nelda Tyler and Myrna Mund) who were able to attend represented us well.

We were welcomed by Senator Troy Fraser and given a tour of the Capitol, then were seated in the gallery of the Senate. The Resolution for our chapter was read and the Senator introduced us. We later met the Senator in the Lt. Governor's reception room for photographs. We felt very privileged to be where so many important events are held.

After lunch at the cafeteria, our next stop was the famous Driskill Hotel (where Dr. Blanton had chartered us following a luncheon 75 years ago). The 1886 Cafe had created a special menu for Alpha Chi's 75th Birthday; the tables even had red roses on them. All of the desserts were gorgeous and delicious. We took our own tour of part of the beautiful hotel before heading home.

Dark clouds were right in front of us -- and they were moving fast. Two cars had almost made it to the 281 cut-off before the big hail started; one stopped at Spicewood Elementary for shelter. Thankfully, everyone made it home without too much damage to their cars or homes. What a wild event for the end of a wonderful day!

Happy Seventy-Fifth Birthday, Alpha Chi
